For those who follow my works and blog..I am still active, but behind the scenes for some reasons.
I am working on a route with a new and large foliagepack loaded with new 3D-trees, trees for block assets, grass etc.. This route will be new and almost all assets used in it. Of course with the detail I am used to work in. When I see other routes, I admire the way the builders can make a route without being so detailed, so they can get a longer route for higher speed. I just can't do that, i want to paint an detailed environment. So my route is shorter, and for lower speed. Much te see in a local German atmosphere.

Owners can download the new version free. Boxed version buyers have to wait a little longer for a upgrade, they are making something for that.

after work..

Every day I go to work, like milions of others.
After work I spend a few hours a day on this hobby..while listening to music.
The fun about this hobby, you can always do anything. Building on a route, making small assets..
This week I am trying to make trees which looks nice with the Tsx machine.
It is another technique, takes a little more polygons, but for near trees it results in nice shadows falling into the cab.

At the moment I am working on new trees. I am not satisfied yet, but it's a start to make nice trees which also cast shadows. It would also be nice when facing polygons would also react to the lightning. Now the always the diffuse color is like it is toward the sun, causing to light grass and trees when it's late afternoon or early morning. In this route I will try to minimize this by using less facing objects.

I still have to resolve the problem with this kind of trees, they are to sharp and edgy than the facing ones.

Since the release of TrainSimulator 2012, also known as RW3 I've started a update for my routes.

improvements for Koblitzer Bergland owners:
-track lods improved for better performance (works fine, although bug in RW isn't fixed yet)
-lofts are normalized (older Canvas plaforms) for lights. Some lofts wrong side was lightned.
-shader problems on buildings combinated with distance mountains and gloom effect.
-near trees improvement for better shadow effects.
-lights added
-and what I can find after that....

I will try to release my update via Aerosoft and/or Rail-sim.de
Expected within a month. (2-4 weeks maximum)

After that I will start to make a improved version of my freeware route Altenburg-Wildau for RW3.

Last weeks I spend in making scenario's for my last route, im Koblitzer Bergland.
I discovered, that is a hell of a job to make a working scenario. In the first place I don't like to cheat with AI traffic. A train form Koblizt to Wildau must actually drive that path, and not just start when the playertrain is in the neighbourhood. But it is almost impossible to achieve that without pulling your hairs out.
Trains blocking the path, priority problems...not my thing to spend time on. So back to work, making scenery for my new route..

Vehicles

After making skies, environment I am learning to make cars and platform characters.

Maby some people think I have a lot of experience in making models,

but most models I made were made of simple cubes, lines and other basic shapes.

In this picture 4 cars. The car at the left is my first attemp to model a car.

After watching some vid's at youtube about moddeling cars, the right one is becoming better.

All these and upcoming cars are also seen on the roads with own sounds.

I a few weeks I will present the name and details of my new route.

Environment done!

I am trying to work as systematicly as possible. Now I have finished the environmental part. A new sky for each season with 10 sorts of textures and adaptive weather patterns. Also replaced the sun and moon, and changed the azimuth angle. Now in winter, the sun stays low, and the shadows are long. With a lot of patience almost any atmosphere can be created in Railworks. Many layers of colors and lighting are giving a second render to the scene. Due of those layers, many times some surprising colors occur in the scnene, it is like a painting-pallet. New Skies

Last weeks I have spend some time to re-discover the terrain texturing and skies. Now I have made a 100% custom terrain texture set with seasonal procedural flora and now I am handling the Sky bleuprints and new clouds. It is quite a different thing than making assets, with a lot of patience, like painting on a canvas.

Example of a sky, here the alpha channel wasn't ready yet. To make a good sky, first a made a tiled sky, and after that I started making the Alpha-layer.

I am planning a new route..(with a train)
For this new route I want to make it as 'new' as possible. New ground textures and procedural flora, new tracks, and in the next day's I will try to make new skies and weather bins.

Addon Kobler Bergland

Aerosoft has announced my new Addon for Railworks,
This are my first steps in payware stuff, but I will also continue to make free-ware! In the next days I will publish some screens of my route, and also some video's and screenshots of my next free-ware addon. This will be a addon which can be used to make nice scenario's . Also in next period I will start to make a real train for RW, now I succesfully imported a fully featured railvehicle! Keep you updated.

Here is the village of Rinckenstadt, a small town on the river from St.Rudolf. This scene is made for a video which I am making of my first rail vehicle. It's working, with own sounds, cab and a small waggon. After learning a lot of tryal and error, I shall start a new 'real train' project. I already did some sound recording, next step is getting technical details of the train,etc..
Objects in this scene are partly from my upcoming route, the railvehicle will be published with some new objects as freeware.

First railvehicle on tracks!

After some work I exported my first railvehicle. It's a free interpretation of a Liebherr 900, with some elements of a ATLAS crane. It is still normal asset, for the next part I have to do some study.
So many (novice) builders stopped finishing their projects, which they started so enthousiastic, because it became to complex. (regrouping, wheels, lods..engine..scripting etc...) My goal is to make a simple version, only used as AI-traffic. When it feels OK, I will try a more complex train.

Old railways

For several years now I am fascinated by old railways. In my hometown a small railway leads to the village of Stiens. It was used for transporting patatoes until the late 90's. After that it was closed and partly dismantled. Now the last parts are disapeared. Today nothing is left of the railwayhistory. There are no factory railways left..Friesland is boring for railwaylovers, thanks to ProRail. The only thing counting for them are 29 eurocents for a kilogram rails..

Both photo's are history by now.. although Arriva is investing the possibilties to reactivate passenger service on some nothern local lines. Hopefully they don't sell the land..

I have finished my route..feeling a bit empty when it comes to Railworks.
Some expert is now doing the (re)signalling of the route. After that I will give some information about the release of my route. I am negotiating with a German company about this.

Until then I wil start my new project..animated scenery for general use. Also I will try to make a train in the next periode. First attemp is a simple rail vehicle, just to learn. Here is a first render of a Liebherr 900(in progress of course) After that maby I start with this Diesel train which is used by Arriva in my provence of Friesland. Regards SAD

A video of a drive through Bad Rinckenburg the current end of the line, about 20 km from Köblitz. In the published version of my route this line ends in a portal. Ater Wildau the branch line continues about 10 km to Hosvenn as a museal railway.

Railworks 2

One big advantage of the Railworks 2 update are the working levelcrossings!
Here's mine. The levelcrossing are not perfect yet, but they are very easy to make and placing is much more simple than the previous ones made by others. (They did of course a good job, a working levelcrossing without a proper bleuprint)

After that 6 new stations have been added and about 25 km of main line.
The most tricky part will be the signalling, but I might get help.
Release? I don't know, last project took me a year and a half..this time, before christmas maby?

My firts building with interior. It has only one LOD and very short view distance. Why not..when leaving the building it doesn't have to be visible anymore. In this case the game engine does not slow down to much, whem passing this building. I'd like to use this as a starting point in a scenario.

After a intermezzo I will continue the work. I found somebody who offered me to redo the signalling of my route. Meanwhile I can make some new scenery and a second expansion of my route. After the section from Wildau to Hosvenn, also the main-line from Köblitz will continue.

While waiting for some information and testing the new signals I have some time for playing around...

Other changes made to my route are:
-changing some tunnels and gradients to make it more real.
-some scenery and trackwork changes to change the time in my route. (building under construction will develop)
-after better signalling I will make new scenario's
-90 new assets.

Exported 6 new Pine trees for near view. Then I used the in-game view and printscreen to make mid-distance textures. In that way to difference between near and mid distance trees is not that great.
See the pictures, the near trees are single objects, the distance trees are grouped facing trees.

Wildau has a wooded environment...
So I made some near view pine trees, so our trains can drive through a dense forest without the trees constantly stare at you. I don't like the behaviour of the facing trees when they are close to the camera.

After that, I will give it a try to make german 'formsignale' for my route. I hope I can use and alter the lua scripts for the signals..but it will need some study...i think. In the addon new scenario's will be added with new scenery. Here's the city of Wildau, where the anual stadfeste are celebrated with loads of german beer!

While sruggling with a internet 'broke down' I could work at my first update of my route.

I am thinking about the way to publish it. Only a package with updated/added files, or a total new package..

suggestions welcome..

I am also thinking about cancelling the seperate packages of my objects. Some users are using my GermanLocal package, and the amount of downloads of my foliage pack(and also not seeing anything of that in UK-screenshots)are the reasons to save my time. Please let me now, if some are interested in those packages to include in their route.

After finishing my route...some packages are being made for routebuilders to include in their build.
The first package is the Foliage Pack. In this package all foliage scenery items out of my route will be in there. (in a new asset folder, so a routebuilder can make a choice what he likes to inlcude)

While doing this..some of the objects are improved with better textures. I also hope to make some new objects. Download will be around the end of this week.Have a nice week..back to school again!

At the moment I am making and testing some scenarios. I want to make 4 to 8 simple scenario's for my route.

After that..finally I can upload my route.

The first shot is a scene of the Seebergbahn. I added some of my scenery. The next picture is a shot out of a scenario.

As I had told before, scenery will be avaible soon after publishing the route as seperate packages.

The folowing packages will be avaible:

-Foliage Pack 1

-Church Pack 1

-Building Pack 1

-Clutter Pack 1

-German Infrastructure Pack 1

-Network Pack(tracks)

I hope that using my assets will become easier for the routebuilder, but also for the future user. The less to download the better. Why should a Uk-route need to download the total package with German catenaryposts?

Today I finished my route. Signalling, scenery, mileposts etc.. al done now.

Next period it will be tested and completed with some scenario's. After that I can delete all unneeded files, and at last make some manual documents.

For those who are waiting for the scenery, it will also be avaible as seperate packages for routebuilders, so they don't have to select my template and route. (otherwise your world editor browser will be overloaded with assets.)

Mileposts

I worked today making mileposts and other signs. Al scenery and trackworks is done now.

Mileposts are easy to make when folowing the development documents at railsimulator.com.

The way to make it does not seem very logical, but it works fine. Maby it is also possible to make other things with this technique..

I have made one (modern)version, I will also make a stone version, well know on old german branch lines.

It was a bit quitet around this blog for a while..but I was forced to stop my work; My PC broke down, so I had to reinstall all programs on my new PC with Windows 7. Now I have a new video-card, so my fps exploded from a poor 14 fps to 180 fps! Everthing is 'back on track' now, so the work continues.

Here some screenshots of Marienwald, a small village with a monastary and brewery! Always a good combination.

Every day when I go to work I pass a abandoned railroad. Years ago I became fascinated by this phenomenon. In my route you can find a lot of scene's with this theme.
Of course it, you can't run a train on it..but is railworks only for trainlovers? Every (boy)fantasy can find a way in this virtual world.

Statistics

This week my computer broke down.. fortunately without data loss.

The power-supply is replaced temporarily until my new PC is ready.

After making a back up I can give some specifications of my route(today).

- main line: 30/35 km long with overhead wires, 10 stations, small industrial brach lines.

- 507 custom GeoPcDx files. (3d models)

- 97 Lofts (roads, tracks, treelines etc..)

- totaly 643 assets(bin-files)

- 423 MB of data.

- The route runs smoothly on a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, Geforce 7300GT 512MB, 2GB DDR3.

Still to do:

-signals(german HP) -100%

-scenario's -100%

-some scenery - 5%

-filling the landscape with it! - 30%

-trackwork - 10%

-cleaning/updating folder structure.

So, still a lot to do.

Apple Pie

Used my spare time to finish my apple tree. Here are the in-game results. These shots are from my route. Back to real world..back to work, have a nice week.

I used this tree to make a mid-distance group of apple trees to safe the fps.

Therefore I made a single box with tex shader, and used it as a child for my apple tree.

I placed the box behind the appletree and pressed printscreen. After that I used the 'select by color' tool of PSP to cut out the background. Here's a example of the results:

This evening I've tried to make a apple Tree for near view.

It's is made using 3 shaders. The texdiff shader for the 3D trunk, and both flora shaders for the leaves and twigs.

It's a lot of work, but I am satisfied with the result unto now. This images show this proces. When finished this tree will have blossom on spring and apples in summer! mmm...

I've added a video of my route with some new animated objects. All objects except the church bell I used the 'scrolling uv' option in Max. Also the helicopter uses this option, so i could make a traffic bleuprint, so it can flying through the sky with rotation rotars.

Foliage

Today I present a few pictures of my Foliage pack.
It is included in my route and will contain around 70 assets, most weeds and small plants.

Now I have 62 assets, but some of them haven't got the quality I want.

Now I have reached the country side of my route, I am making some assets for farming.

Corn, apple trees, strawberryfields etc...

The facing foliage shader is a very simple but good solution for making beautifull foliage.

Look at the Derek Siddle blog for more nice examples.
On the images here you also see some examples of the custom procedural foliage and tree lofts in my route.

Trackwork

Some routebuilders used my de-local tracks. For this route I made 2 new track types. A set of tracks with wooded sleepers and a set of concrete sleepers.
Both sets will have own switches with animated manual and automatic levers.

The sets supports the 'blend' option of the editor. Especially nice the make the end of the track rusty. Both sets will have a own ground gravel-texture supplied in the environment section of my route. Also tunneltracks are included. Sounds are unfortunately the Kuju ones, I don't have the skills yet to make my own custom tracksound yet.

Altenburg to Wildau.

Here you can follow the development of my route for Railworks.

It's a fictional route situated in Germany, with a strong local atmosphere.
Today I start with some pictures of the finished parts of my route.
Next posts will give some more information about the number of new objects, and other technical details.
